SAR Award  Programs



The Athens Chapter has been active in the programs of the National Society, including the Eagle Scout Essay Contest, SAR Law Enforcement Commendation Medal, the High School History Essay Contest, awarding ROTC Medals to both college and High Schools Programs, the Bronze Good Citizenship Medals, and participation in the Georgia Society programs. In addition, the graves of several Revolutionary Patriots have been marked with government headstones. 

ROTC AWARD:
The SAR awards the ROTC Medal to foster the principle of the "citizen-soldier", exemplified by the Minutemen of Revolutionary War days. award is presented by a Chapter, a State Society, or the National Society to ROTC or JROTC cadets who are selected for having a high degree of merit with respect to leadership qualities, military bearing and general excellence. The recipients are selected by the Commanding Officer of the ROTC or JROTC unit, who should be given full latitude in making the selection. 

The SAR ROTC Medal is approved by the United States Army, the United States Navy, the United States Marine Corps, and the United States Air Force. Each service has notified its ROTC and JROTC units of this approval and has authorized presentation to its cadets or midshipmen.

Eagle Scout Scholarship: 
Open to all Eagle Scouts who are currently registered in an active unit and have not reached their 19th birthday during the year of application.   (The application year is the calendar year, 01 Jan. to 31 Dec.)   The year that Eagle was awarded is not restricted.  College plans do not need to be completed in order to receive the cash scholarship.  Three cash scholarship awards are given: As the National First Place winner - $8,000.00; Runner-up - $4,000.00; 2nd runner-up - $2,000.00.  You may apply more than one year if you meet the age requirements but no more than $8,000.00 total may be granted to any one Eagle Scout.

Americanism Elementary School  Poster Contest:
This new contest is directed at students in the 4th or 5th grades, depending on which grade year the American Revolution is taught in their educational system.  The National Society Elementary School Poster Contest will stimulate interest in American History in support of the Fourth or Fifth Grade Curriculum.  The topic for the Poster Contest will be set by the Americanism Committee at each Spring Trustee�s Meeting for the upcoming fall school year.  The contest will be judged at the National Congress each year.  A representative of the National Art Education Association (NAEA) will be invited to participate in the poster judging 

GEORGE S. & STELLA M. KNIGHT ESSAY CONTEST
​The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) invites all high school students (9th through 12th grades) interested in the American Revolution to participate in the George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest. The contest is open to all US Citizen and Legal Resident students attending home schools, public, parochial, or private high schools in that same grade range. The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed this program on the 2017-18 NASSP List of Approved Contests, Programs, and Activities for Students.
To participate, students must submit an original 800- to 1,200-word essay based on an event, person, philosophy or ideal associated with the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the United States Constitution. Each student’s essay will be judged based upon its historical accuracy, clarity, organization, grammar and spelling, and documentation.
The contest is conducted in three phases: the local chapter, state-level society, and national phases. The contest must be entered through an SAR chapter near the student’s residence. In some cases, the contest may be entered at the state level (if the local society does not have chapters or the chapters are not participating) and a contact-at-large should be used to find out more contest details. The list of contest contacts listed below can provide you with assistance in entering the Knight Essay Contest. Only one entry per student is permitted per contest year.

The Sgt. Moses Adams Memorial Middle School Brochure Contest
This contest is open to middle school students, depending on when the American Revolution or Government is taught in their school system. This includes public, private, parochial, charter and home schooled students. The contest is also open to members of the C.A.R., Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts who are in the same grade if their school does not participate. Judging is based upon content, creativity and correctness. The permanent theme is "The Founding Documents of the United States." They are: Articles of Confederation, Declaration of Independence, Federalist Papers, Constitution, and Bill of Rights. National winners receive a ribbon, certificate and a cash award. The Children of the American Revolution Award
This award is given at chapter, state, and national levels to C.A.R. members who have performed outstanding service in the furthering of the principles of freedom, and knowledge about and appreciation of the American Revolution, and in supporting the goals of the C.A.R.
